Baidham - Kala Lagaw Ya

A tale woven into the very fabric of the stars. In the ancient traditions of the Torres Strait Islanders, there exists a celestial legend known as Baidham—a majestic shark constellation adorned with seven shimmering stars.
As July's embrace unfolds, Baidham casts its celestial form across the northern horizon, aligning with the distant shores of New Guinea. This cosmic alignment brings stillness to the winds and tranquility to the seas, signaling the sacred season of planting.
But beware, for even in moments of serenity, danger lurks in the depths. As Baidham's light bathes the sea, a slick of grease coats the ocean's surface—a sign whispered among the elders as "Baidham aw id," the moment when the shark's very essence melds with the waves. Yet, heed this warning: it is also the season of shark mating, a time when the waters churn with higher aggression and danger.
Amidst this celestial dance, remember the delicate balance between reverence and respect for the natural world. And as the stars light the night sky know that Baidham's legacy lives on, guiding us through the cycles of the seasons and life.
